Why brand your small business? It’s a fair question.

Why dedicate the time, energy and money it takes to create something that’s known beyond your circle of friends, relatives, clients and aquainteneces? Why tempt failure’s heartless wrath? Dare to be a bit bigger than you think your are? Challenge yourself to take a stand? Define yourself? Stand out from the crowd? Why work into the wee hours? Long after the kids have gone to bed. Breaking only to watch the latest episode of West Wing or to hear The Donald utter those two ominous words.

Why do it? I suppose there are as many answers as there are people out there trying to get it done. I can think of several answers that work for me. It’s fun. It’s scary. It’s creative. It feeds my independent spirit . . . Yes. All of those are true, but they’re not the real reason. The deep, driving motivation.

I was reminded, this morning, what my real reason is. It’s the 30 precious minutes I spent with my daughter. We sat at a local coffee shop and shared a quick game of checkers, hot chocolate and a breakfast sandwich. We laughed hysterically as I drove her to school. She smiled and kissed me goodbye saying, "I love you dad."

Today, that’s my deep driving motivation.
