What’s On An Entrepreneur’s IPod?

Don’t you LOVE the feeling you get when you hear a song that has a killer sound, and is coupled with lyrics that unload a world of energy on that entrepreneurial mind of yours? For me personally, music fuels me to get up and do something with myself… it never fails. Music is a mind-altering drug of inspiration and motivation that I’ve yet to find behind the counter of a pharmacy.

There’s so much brainless music on the airwaves right now. “Presi-dunce” Bush needs to pull the troops out of this stupid war we’re currently in, and have them fight the music labels of our country that are promoting gimmicky musicians who only care about making money instead of great music. What happened to the idea of writing songs that touch people’s emotions?… What happened to the idea of writing songs that stimulate the mind and help us increase our intelligence?… What happened to music as an artform?

Fortunately, there’s an elite group of musicians that are keeping it real and playing music that means something. Unfortunately, most of these artists are performing under the radar – So when you discover an artist that’s making the most of their opportunity to influence, you need to pass the word along to your buddies who need a musical kick-in-the-ass.

As an entrepreneur, I’m always looking for music that inspires me to move forward with all of the exciting ideas and ventures that I want to carry out – and sometimes, when I get in a rut and things aren’t going my way, I need the buzz of a good tune to get me going again. I’m sure most of you bizMAVERICKS operate the same way. It’s amazing how much of an impact a good song can have your attitude!

A band called “Mute Math” is really making an impression on my maverick-mindset as of late. They have a song called “Typical” that’ll make you wanna build the next friggin’ Google. The song tells the story of a person who is living a normal everyday life, and wants so badly to experience what it’s like to be a success. He wants “to break the spell of the typical” and really be somebody. The sound is a mixture of rock and electronica (Think “U2” mixed with “The Killers”), and is mixed with lyrics that aren’t overly poetic – and are therefore easy to comprehend. I guarantee it will knock some motivation in ya! Give it a listen on the bizMAVERICKS MySpace profile where I’ve currently had it playing 24/7.

But before you bizMAVERICKS go listen to the song, I’ve got some questions for you to answer in the comments section below…

What songs make you wanna change the world?

What artists are using their talents to influence others to greatness?

Tell a story about a moment in time where a song magically slapped you in the face and gave you a entrepreneurial epiphany.

Wishing you continued success…

bizMAVERICK…

  1. What songs make you wanna change the world?

What artists are using their talents to influence others to greatness?

Both questions are easily answered with KRS-One.

The Songs Woke Up from his current album Life and Dream/I been There from Keep Right give me a lot momentum.

  2. There was a time where I HATED going to work at this one particular job – and there was a song by Papa Roach that really fired me up every morning so I could make it through the day with an ounce of sanity. The song is called “Not Listening”.

To summarize the meaning of the song… It’s basically about taking a stand for yourself and making things happen on your own terms, instead of everyone elses. It’s worth a $1 download off of iTunes. Here’s the lyrics…

    “I’m not listening, not anymore
The more I learn, the more I ignore
    I’m not listening, not anymore
The more I hear, the more I ignore
I’m not listening, not anymore, No

Cause You gotta be bigger, be faster, be stronger
If your gonna survive any longer
In this lifetime, it better be the right time
The first time might be your last time
Am I a failure if I got nothing to lose
No, I’m not a failure, I got something to prove

    [Chorus:]
    I’m not listening, not anymore
The more I learn, the more I ignore
    I’m not listening, not anymore
The more I hear, the more I ignore, the more I ignore

    Cause I’ve lost my innocence
    And I’m a stranger, A life changer
I’m a man thats not afraid of danger
I walk my own path, and blaze my own trail
Because I’m not afraid to derail
I won’t get in line or be a middle man
So eff you I’ll make my own plan
And I got respect and I don’t neglect
The people that I really care to protect
Am I a failure if I got nothing to lose
No, I’m not a failure, I got something to prove

    [Chorus]

I told you before, wont listen no more
I told you before, lets settle the score
I told you before, wont listen no more
I told you before, lets settle the score

    If not me then who?
    If not now then when?
    If not me then who?
    If not now then when?

    [Chorus]

I told you before, wont listen no more
I told you before, lets settle the score
I told you before, wont listen no more
I told you before, lets settle the score

    Set it off right now
Blow it up, set it off
Eff it up, set it off
Blow it up, Blow it up right now”

  3. Great post! Couldn’t agree more. Most people have favorite bands/groups/singers and the sound of their music is mental relaxation. Me? GreenDay and Nirvana. Can’t get enough of it. I have a mix that I play over and over. When I am coding and writing papers, this mix puts me in “the zone”…Keep up the wonderful writing.

  4. Hello Brad and SBB,

Sounds like there is a bit of a falling out lately since a comment made within this posting. Let’s put the political views aside and get back to talking about why everyone is here for “To learn, share and talk about business.” Other then that one comment, good posting brad.

  5. Brandon… I sincerely wish you the best, and all of us at SmallBusinessBranding.com are always here for you if you ever wish to return.

Lucas… What’s goin’ on big guy? CommerceCubes.com really seems to be doing well. Keep up the good work with that! To get our conversation back on track… What songs are currently motivating you, Lucas, to push forward with bigger and badder ideas for CommerceCubes.com?

    Brad

  6. Hello Brad,

Doing pretty well these days Brad. CommerceCubes is just a great outlet for me to showcase my experiences in business. I am not writing for money so its perfect… not fuelled by $$$

What i am getting busy with is BizCandy… my new service. I’ve enjoyed doing freelance work for other companies but i am ready to have a system that is all my own. Plus i am a geek that likes to experiment and this would allow me to do that and grow it in the coming years. I am listening to a lot of “Ben Lee, G. Love, Jack Johnson, Feist, Nickelback, KT Tungstall, Groove Armada and things like that.

    Talk soon Brad,

    Lucas

  7. This is a business blog? “Presi-Dunce Bush”? Sheesh.

It’s my sense that it’s mostly liberal kids who buy crappy music from the labels. Don’t you think that there are free market forces at work here, or is “evil Karl Rove” doing his mind control magic on them?

I’m with Brandon. Which way is the cyber-door? (BTW, I was a liberal until I reached my mid-forties. I sincerely hope you figure it out much sooner.)

  8. Hey Brad,

My vote goes to the Australian band, george. If you haven’t heard them, you need to rectify that straight away! Unique, amazing sound. And Katie Noonan’s voice is to die for. I have to sing out loud with Katie. REALLY loud. (Neighbours love it I’m sure :D)

As for ipods, no thanks. Can’t stand those little things in my ears, echhh. I need “surround sound”!

Luc – love your work matey.

  9. Scott,

Thank you for your guidance concerning my political beliefs. I sincerely appreciate it (Seriously, no sarcasm in that statement).

I might not ultimately accept your way of thinking, but I will be open-minded enough to consider an alternate brand of thought. I believe that every individual’s beliefs are valuable even if I don’t choose them as my own.

And one more thing Scott… If you ever wish to return to SmallBusinessBranding.com we would love to have you back.

    Brad
