Three Tools To Backup Your Email

Why not? After all, modern entrepreneurs like us rely a lot on email. I know I do. Often times, the emails are our only record of a transaction or agreement. So it becomes very important to save them.

For me, I simply include the mailbox folder in Mozy and I also make sure it’s included when I do backups to the network drive. But some of you may want something more direct. These three tools may help.

Mailstore – quite impressive. Backup from any POP or IMAP accounts. Free personal use version available, commercial versions start at $22.90

Windows Mail Backup – they have different versions for Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Incredimail and more.

Outlook Personal Backup Add-in – From Microsoft, available free. Works for Outlook 2007, 2003 and 2002

  1. I have Outlook as my main email program and always hhad problems regarding performance. So I looked for a decent backup plan to save 5 years of mail before I started fiddling around with the program or even the PC.
the solution was to install Thunderbird and import everything into it. Now I could easily backup the old mails (TB saves them in a file structure on disc, no in one big file) and in an emergency I also could start working with Thunderbird.

  2. I use web base email like Gmail , but I do download and backup my emails. This is excellent advice just think of all the information and pic’s you would lose.

  3. According to what you chose to backup because if its too large it won’t send. This laptop is acting very slow and it had malware removed and I scan it consistently to make sure there isn’t anymore malware in it. And this computer has Mircosoft office applications that i don’t have the cd to and I want to format the hard drive.

  4. Account has been inactive for approximately 45 days, but when I logged-on, all email has disappeared, but all contacts info is still present. How do I get my emails restored from server backup?

  5. Unfortunately I do not properly back up my e-mails. It would be a big hassle to lose all of that e-mail record, especially the receipt/invoice e-mails. So I’ll have to look into something like this. Thanks for the list Lynette.

  6. When you use Outlook, make sure that you keep the original copy of the emails on server for at least two days. So if anything goes wrong you have at least emails of last two days.

  7. I am preparing to work on my computer to make it run faster and stop crashing, including adding RAM. So far I’ve backed up most of the files I couldn’t do without

  8. I am preparing to work on my computer to make it run faster and stop crashing, including adding RAM. So far I’ve backed up most of the files I couldn’t do without, but I would like to backup some special email folders too.

  9. you mean outlook folders, if so go to file->archive and select the foders you want to archive and specify the location for it (desktop preferable for ease) and give OK you’re done then back it up. like any other file.
